When the World Crumbles Steve x Reader Chapter 4

You never thought you'd be dragged through the streets to your doom by yourself, or your alternate self for that matter. In this alternate world you were Rumlow's personal HYDRA agent. That's why it was so wrong. You'd never work for HYDRA, especially after what they'd done to Steve. This alternate you was everything you fought so hard not to be. You were just happy Rumlow didn't know who Steve was here. Who knows what he'd do to him if he did.

You were interrupted from your thoughts when Rumlow pushed Steve into you. Apparently he needed your alternate self to watch both you and Steve so he could go ahead and alert Loki of your arrival. You glanced behind you wondering what your chances of escaping were. It was highly unlikely that you and Steve could take down fifty HYDRA agents without one of them taking you down first.

You were so glad Steve was here with you. You couldn't imagine going through this alone. You made a promise to yourself right then and there that if you made it out of this, you'd tell him how you felt.

You felt Steve lean in close to you, his lips tickling your ear as he spoke. "What your alternate self said about loving me, is that true or was that just her playing with me?"

You bit your lip at his question. Now was not the time to tell him. "Steve I......."

"Hey" Your alternate self yelled hitting you on the back of the head. "No talking. We're almost there"

"We'll talk about this later" Steve mumbled barely above a whisper turning to glare at your alternate self for hitting you.

You swallowed hard nodding slightly as you glanced around trying to figure out where you were. This part of New York seemed familiar. It wasn't somewhere you went often, but for some reason you knew it well.

As you rounded another corner, you realized why. Normally where the Statue of Liberty stood was now a towering palace. You could feel Steve tense up next to you at the sight.

As you neared the entrance of the palace doors you were greeted by an old friend.

"Coulson?" You said your eyes widening. He was supposed to be dead, but it made sense that he's be alive here. Without the Avengers Loki wouldn't have had to invade the helicarrier therefore not having to kill Coulson. "You work for HYDRA?"

"I can assure you miss that I do not work for HYDRA" He said glaring at you and Steve.

You breathed a sigh of relief looking over at Steve who didn't seem as relieved as you did.

"I'm King Loki's personal body guard. I'm also here to warn you that if you step one foot out of line, or try anything funny, I will not hesitate to put a bullet through your skull. Are we clear?"

You swallowed hard nodding at his vicious words. You didn't know what was worse. Coulson being dead, or Coulson being like this.

As the alternate you continued to shove you and Steve deeper into the palace you grew more and more nervous. Tony said that you could only stay in the alternate universe so long until your alternate reality became your only reality. You'd already been there for two days. How much longer did you have to find a way home?

Steve seemed to sense you worried thoughts and leaned in close to you again. "Don't worry. It's gonna be fine"

You nodded knowing that he wasn't so sure of that himself. What exactly did they want with you, you hadn't done anything wrong. Sure you looked out of place at first, but you didn't anymore. As you approached Loki's throne you knew you'd find out soon enough.

"Peter and Wendy is it?" Loki said cocking his head at you and Steve. "Now I think we both know that's not true, Y/n and Steve. Welcome to your alternate universe" Be said putting his hands up and gesturing around the room.

"You know this is an alternate universe?" Steve said.

Loki nodded. "Well for you it is. Just as your world would be an alternate universe for me. The other guy found that out for us"

"Other guy?" You asked confused.

"Yes" Loki nodded. "A while ago one of my unfortunate citizens found a portal to your world. He couldn't find a way back so his alternate self, the one from your world, returned here. It was an absolute mess. Unfortunately I had to kill him before he could fix anything"

"What do you mean fix anything" Steve said clearly upset that Loki had this much control over the world.

"Oh my you don't know anything do you? Well, the alternate self of the man would slowly undo everything that's wrong here. So in other words he'd unknowingly change this world to be more like yours. Just the same as if someone here returned to your world. They would slowly cause your world to be more like this one, and that is exactly what I intend to do with you Agent L/n and Captain"

Your eyes widened. How on earth did Loki know so much. Stark had just scratched the surface of what an alternate universe was. Loki knew everything there was to know.

"You'll never get away with this" Steve said sourly. "We'll stop you, whether it's us or the rest of our team"

"Oh really Captain" Loki said with an evil grin on his face. "You've been here for what, two days. The other man was gone for five before his alternate self returned. You only have three days left. I don't think you'll be going anywhere anytime soon. In just a little while I'll have my best HYDRA Agent and a scrawny little Captain America back in your world. Soon enough your world will be just like this one" He laughed. "Thor" He yelled off to his right.

You followed Loki's gaze and cocked your head as you heard a awful dragging sound. Leading the dragging noise was Thor with Mjölnir chained around his ankle dragging behind him. Could he not lift it, but it's either you can lift it or you can't.

"Take these prisoners to the dungeon please" Loki purred evilly.

"My Lady. Good Sir" Thor nodded sadly at you and Steve. "If you'll cooperate, this will be easier and less painful for all of us"

You started to follow Thor and descended down flights of stairs with a handful of HYDRA agents following a fair distance behind. Hopefully they were far enough distance away that they couldn't hear what you were about to say.

"Thor, I know you don't know us, or at least this version of us, but you have to trust me in my world we're friends and now I need your help" You said barely above a whisper.

"We were friends?" He asked turning towards you.

You nodded. "Yes we were. We need your help, please"

He glared as you suspiciously for a moment and shook his head. "I'm sorry, if Loki's taken you prisoner it's for a good reason. Why should I trust you?"

You were about to say something else but Steve cut you off. "That's fine. We understand. Thank you for listening. In return for you hearing us out, the least I can do is help you with this" Steve said leaning forward and picking up Mjölnir so Thor could walk freely.

You couldn't help but smile. "I knew you could lift it" You said barely above a whisper making Steve grin.

Thor's eyes widened and then he sighed. "What is it you need me to do?"

"Are you in contact with Heimdall here?" You asked hopeful.

He nodded. "Indeed I am. He's mostly in contact with Loki but I might have a chance to speak to him. What is it you need?"

"Can you ask him how we can get home?" You said almost pleadingly.

Thor nodded. "I can talk to him, weather I help you or not is another matter entirely. You may say we're friends in this other world, but Heimdall will tell me of your true intentions. Although this one lifting Mjölnir is proof enough" He said gesturing to Steve. "I just need to be sure"

"Fair enough" You said as you and Steve were pushed by a HYDRA agent into your dirty cell causing Steve to drop Mjölnir. Thor sighed but nodded in Steve's direction for allowing him a small break from his burden before he began to drag it back along with him. You waited until Thor and the agents slipped back around up the stairs. "Do you think he'll help us" You said turning to Steve concerned.

"I don't know" He said frowning. "But you heard Loki, we've only got three days, we can't afford to waste time waiting"

With that last statement Steve ran and bashed his shoulder into the door of the cell. It didn't budge a bit and he rammed it over and over again until a bloodied bruise formed on his right shoulder.

"Steve that's enough" You said going forward and stopping him before he could smash into it again. You gently laid your hand over his shoulder and he cringed slightly. "Maybe waiting wouldn't be so bad huh?"

He nodded with defeat in his eyes but you smiled at him encouragingly.

"The girls right" Someone called out from the shadows of the cell next to yours. "I've tried everything to get out of here. Loki enchanted the metal, it's useless"

"Who's there?" Steve asked stepping protectively in front of you.

The man emerged from the shadows and your breath caught in your throat. This was someone you never expected to find here.
